Established in 1987, we have helped many families realize their dream of owning a custom-built home.

Midlake Builders takes pride in having a smooth, organized and detailed building program.

Our strong work ethic, attention to detail, and “can do” attitude makes the building process run smoothly. We build each home as if it was our own, wanting the very best in quality and longevity in the products we select. As a result, the majority of our work is referral-based and repeat business. The Midlake difference is service, integrity and excellence in all we do.

Midlake Builders provides an extensive range of preconstruction and construction related services and solutions for projects of varying scope, budget, schedule and complexity.

Our Process

By working with a team of dedicated and experienced professionals including carpenters, project managers, accounting and customer service personnel, we control the building process. We attribute our longevity and success to many things, but being committed to our customers’ needs and building high-quality homes are the cornerstones of our business.

Meet Our Staff


Robert Schmerheim



Owner, Bob Schmerheim has been building custom homes in northern Michigan for over 30 years. He started in the construction industry in 1982 when he went to work for a contractor in Saginaw, his home town. In 1987 he created Midlake Builders and throughout the years has built a reputation for high quality craftsmanship and standing behind the homes he builds, helping to make Midlake Builders one of the premier builders in the area.

He enjoys helping people navigate the building process and being part of the owners’ infectious excitement as they watch their dreams take shape one board at a time. Away from the office, Bob and his wife Kelli enjoy the northern Michigan lifestyle and taking advantage of all the activities their small town has to offer.


Patty Bouck

General Manager


Patty’s been a part of the Midlake team for more than 20 years, and over the course of time, her responsibilities grew and changed as times changed and the company grew. Her expertise is in construction accounting and administration, but she takes on many different roles and is involved with all projects from initial pricing through to finished photographs.


Pete Pawloski

Director of Sales and Marketing


Pete has over 35 years’ experience in the construction business. He started as a hands-on self-employed contractor in Northern Michigan and is knowledgeable in all aspects of building. He was a manager for a national home building company where he worked with clients to produce high-end home designs. He also served as Director of Marketing and Sales for a mid-sized builder, and as Vice President of a national log home company prior to coming to work for Midlake.


Chuck Crego

Director of Field Operations – Superintendent


Charles James Crego, also known as Chuck, was born and raised in Michigan. At an early age he started his construction career working in masonry. In 1994 Chuck started and managed his own construction company where he built numerous custom homes over the course of 10 years. He is well versed in all aspects of construction and is a valuable asset to the Midlake team. Chuck enjoys working hard to make sure homeowners are happy and he has forged many lifelong friendships that started with him being the point of contact for the owners.


Jim Smith

Project Estimator


Jim was born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan, but has resided in Traverse City since the late 70’s. He started in the building business when he was 18 years old working for a larger Traverse City builder. He has hands-on experience in framing, siding, and roofing, but specialized in interior trim and cabinetry work. Jim became a licensed builder in 1991 while running his own company, Timber Ridge Contractors, building large custom homes and doing some light commercial projects. He closed his company in 2008, moved to Asheville, North Carolina and worked as a construction manager for a large building contractor. He’s been a construction manager/estimator since returning to Traverse City in 2011.


Mary Pearson

Office Administrator


Mary joined our staff in 2016. She has over 20 years’ experience and is very accomplished in many aspects of construction administration and office management. Mary wears many hats and is our “go to” person. If it needs to get done, Mary is the one you want on your team. She is the friendly voice that will most likely greet you when you call the Midlake office.
